    Tender, juicy prime rib roast recipe made with simple ingredients and easy to cook instructions!

    A prime rib roast is the ultimate Christmas dinner. It’s a high quality, well-marbled cut of beef that may be a little bit pricey, but it’s absolutely worth it. When cooked correctly, prime rib is incredibly tender, juicy and practically melt in your mouth.

    The secret to the perfect prime rib is all in the cooking method. You don’t need heavy seasoning as this cut stand out on its own. Simple spices enhance the natural beef flavor without overpowering it, letting the meat be the star of the meal.

    Ingredients

    • Prime Rib Roast: 3-4 bone-in is what we used. Other sizes cook times may vary.
    • Seasonings: garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, salt
    • Will also need: Roasting rack and meat thermometer

    How to Roast Prime Rib

    Remove the prime rib from the refrigerator 1-2 hours before cooking to bring to room temperature. Place on roasting rack fat side up and season with all seasonings.

    Preheat oven to 450 degrees F and roast for 20 minutes. Reduce temperature to 300 degrees F and cook (about 20 minutes per pound) until internal temperature reaches 115 degrees for rare, 125 degrees for medium rare and 135 degrees for medium.

    Remove from oven, tent with foil and let rest for 30 minutes before slicing.

    How to Slice Prime Rib

    • Let roast rest fully before slicing.
    • Use a sharp carving knife.
    • Slice against the grain into thick or thin slices depending on preference.
    • Serve with au jus or horseradish sauce.

    Prime Rib Internal Temperatures

    (Remove from oven 5-10 degrees before final temperature)

    • Rare: 115-120 degrees F
    • Medium rare: 125 – 130 degrees F
    • Medium: 135-140 degrees F

    Storing Leftovers

    • Fridge: Wrap tightly in plastic and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat to desired temperature or eat cold on sandwiches.
    • Freezer: Wrap tightly in plastic and store in freeze for up to 6 months. Thaw out in refrigerator overnight. Reheat to desired temperature.

    Plan on ¾-1 pound per person for a healthy portion and multiple sides being served.

    How many minutes to cook per pound for prime rib?

    After the high heat sear, cook 15-20 minutes per pound at 325 degrees F.

    If someone prefers their prime rib more done, take a portion and place it on a flat top griddle or hot skillet to cook until it reaches their desired doneness.
