What is Peppermint Patty made of?
Peppermint patties are made with powdered sugar, condensed milk, peppermint extract and of course chocolate. Peppermint patties are thin patties that are plum-full of cooling peppermint flavor.
Ingredients Needed
- Powdered Sugar – If your powdered sugar has clumps in it, run it through a sifter. This will give you that ultra smooth texture.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk – This is a very thick and sweet milk that is used to give you a rich and creamy texture.
- Peppermint Extract – Find the extract in the baking aisle. This is going to give you a rush of peppermint flavor. A little goes a long way.
- Dark Chocolate Wafers – I love dark chocolate next to this rich peppermint flavor.
- Vegetable Shortening – The shortening is going to help the chocolate set up and create a hardened texture.
- Christmas Sprinkles – These are optional but I love adding a few sprinkles on top to give it a holiday festive look.
How to Make Peppermint Patties
Step One: Start by grabbing a bowl and mixer. Add in the condensed soup, and extract and mix for two minutes.
Step Two: Next you will slowly add in the powdered sugar, a little at a time. It is going to form a cookie dough texture.
Step Three: Once combined use a scoop and make little balls by rolling. Then you will flatten the patties into a patty disk. Aim for around half an inch thick.
Step Four: You will then let the disks dry, which takes around 3 hours. Flip them over during the drying process so each side dries.
Step Five: Next you will melt your chocolate with the vegetable oil. Then heat and stir until fully melted.
Step Six: Dip each of the mints in one at a time. Then shake off excess chocolate and place it on wax paper. Then add sprinkles while the chocolate is still wet.
Step Seven: Let the chocolate dry, and then serve and enjoy.
Storing Chocolate Covered Mint Patties
Room Temperature – You can store your mints at room temperature in an airtight container. If you are going to stack the chocolates, place wax paper between the layers of mints.
Freezer – The mints also freeze well. Just place in a single layer (or add wax paper between layers) in a freezer container. Then freeze for up to 6 months. Then thaw on the counter when you are ready to serve.
Variations To Recipe
- Add food coloring to the peppermint filling. You could do red and green colors for Christmas, pastels for Easter or spring time, etc.
- Leave off the sprinkles and drizzle white chocolate over the top for a change of looks.
- Use milk chocolate or even white chocolate for dipping.
- Change up the flavor of the extract you use. Spearmint or even wintergreen would taste great with the chocolate.
