This Easter Bunny Cake is an adorable dessert that’s perfect for after Easter dinner. It’s simple to make with cake mix, frosting and candy decorations.

Easter traditions are different for every family but usually include a big Easter dinner such as ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, deviled eggs, and dinner rolls followed by a sweet dessert to finish the meal. At our house, we usually have strawberry pretzel dessert, cheesecake or banana pudding.

This year I thought I would change things up with an Easter Bunny cake because it would be fun to make, a hit with the kids, and something a little different. It turned out so cute and easy to make thanks to a simple hack that creates the perfect bunny shape - no cake decorating skills required.

Bunny Shaped Cake on a white platter frosted in white and pink icing and decorated with jelly beans for the bow tie, black icing, Twizzlers, and pink frosting for the bunny face

Oh and I didn’t make it from scratch but that can be our little secret. Preparing Easter dinner already takes enough time, and sometimes there just isn’t much extra time left for baking from scratch.

It tastes just as delicious using boxed cake mix and pairs nicely with my some of my other Easter desserts like Easter dirt pudding or Easter chocolate blossom cookies.

    • Prep time: 20 minutes
    • Baking Time: 25- 30 minutes
    • Total Time: About 1 hour (including cooling and decorating)
    • Method: Oven, we used 2 round cake pans
    • Great for: Easter dinner dessert, family gatherings
Ingredients - carrot cake mix, oil, black icing, jelly beans, pink frosting, vanilla frosting, eggs and 2 round pans

    Easter Bunny Cake Ingredients

    • Cake Mix: I used carrot cake but you can also use vanilla and yellow.
    • Frosting: Vanilla or white to frost the cake and pink for the inside of the ears, nose, mouth and bow tie
    • Black Icing: for the eyes
    • Candy: pull apart Twizzlers for the whiskers and jelly beans for the bow tie

How to Make an Easter Bunny Cake

2 round cake pans filled with cake batter

Step 1: Bake the cakes according to the directions on the cake mix boxes using two round cake pans. Allow the cakes to cool completely.

One round cake cut into 3 to make the ears and bow tie for the bunny cake

Step 2: Cut one cake into three pieces to form the bunny’s tow ears and bow tie.

Place the round cake in the center of the platter add the two ears on top and bow tie at the bottom

Step 3: Arrange the bunny shape on a serving platter by placing one whole round cake in the center for the head. Position the two ear pieces above the head and the bow piece below it.

frost the ears and face with vanilla frosting and fill in the center of the ears with pink frosting, make the eyes with black icing, the nose and mouth with pink icing

Step 4: Frost the bunny’s head and ears with white frosting. Frost the bow tie, the centers of the ears, and the nose and mouth with pink frosting. Add the eyes with black icing.

pull apart one or two Twizzlers, cut into thirds and add three whiskers to each side of the nose

Step 5: Pull apart 1-2 Twizzlers, cut them into thirds and place 3 pieces on each side to create whiskers.

frost the bow tie with pink icing and decorate with jelly beans

Step 6: Decorate the bow tie with jelly beans. Serve and enjoy!

                Helpful Tips

                • Let the cakes cool completely before decorating so the frosting doesn’t melt.
                • A serrated knife works best for cutting and shaping.
                • If you want an extra fluffy bunny look, sprinkle shredded coconut on the frosting.
                • Place the cake on the serving platter you plan to serve it on before decorating so you don’t have to move it later.

                Storing Leftovers

Store leftover cake in an airtight container or cover with plastic in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

                Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this cake ahead of time?

Yes! You can bake the cakes a day ahead and decorate the bunny cake the next day.

Do I have to use boxed cake mix?

Not at all. If you prefer homemade cake, you can make it from scratch.

What candy works best for decorating?

Jelly beans, licorice (black or red), M&M’s (peanut or regular) or sprinkles all work great for decorating.
