These Graduation Cap Cupcakes are perfect for grads of any age, from preschool to college. They’re easy to make and can be customized with your school’s colors.
While my son is getting ready to graduate high school, I’ve been brainstorming on so many ideas for the party. These Graduation Cap Cupcakes are definitely at the top of my list and so adorable for a graduation party.
The cupcakes are the easy part as you can use a boxed cake mix, store bought frosting with some food coloring to match your school colors. The graduation caps take some time and are made with chocolate and candy. They are the cutest addition to the cupcakes.

Graduation Cap Cupcake Ingredients
- Box cake mix: I used a white cake mix, but you can use any flavor you like.
- Frosting: You can use store bought frosting or make your own. I used vanilla frosting and tinted it with food coloring to match my school colors.
- Food coloring: To color the frosting to match your school colors.
- Cupcake toppers: I used chocolate squares, mini Reese’s, mini M&M’s and Peel N Pull Twizzlers.
How to Make Graduation Cupcakes
Prepare and bake cupcakes per directions on box. Allow cupcakes to cool completely.
In a bowl, add white frosting to a bowl and food coloring if you wish and mix together until desired shade.
Add frosting to a piping bag and pipe onto cool cupcakes.
Make the graduation cap toppers (tutorial found here) and place on top of each cupcake.
Serve and enjoy!
Helpful Tips and Variations
- Save on time and make the cupcakes the night before the party and store in an airtight container.
- Double or triple the recipe to serve a crowd.
- Add dusting edible gold or silver sprinkles on top for extra shine.

How to Store

- 1 (15.25 oz.) box white cake mix plus ingredients on box; eggs, water, oil
- 1 tub vanilla frosting
