need to know when building a deck

Having the perfect backyard deck for entertainment in the summertime is what people want the most. I’m trying to make that come true with my vision of turning my backyard into an oasis using TimberTech. There are several things you might not be aware of when preparing to build a composite deck. I think the hard part is choosing which color and style but here are also a few things that you should know before you begin building that composite deck you’ve been wanting.

What You Need to Know When Building a Deck

    Get a building permit

If you’re planning on building a deck over 200 square feet, more than 30’’ off the ground, attached to a building, or where an exit leads out onto the deck, you’re going to need a building permit. You want your deck to be in building code so that no one gets hurt. Also if you ever go to sell your home and your deck is not in code, it’ll cause extra frustration and headaches.

    Find your budget

Building a deck is already expensive, no matter how cheap you go. The average amount spent on a deck will cost you around $7,000. Find out how much you can afford before you decide what materials and design you’re looking to build.

    Don’t go cheap on materials

Building this type of masterpiece should not be done going cheap on materials. If you do, after a few seasons those nails or screws will corrode and depreciate all that hard work into building it. It’s good to keep costs to a minimum, but not going so cheap that it needs repaired after a few years.

TimberTech offers technologically-advanced materials and the most design options such as mix and match such as width, color and style for a more enjoyable, longer-lasting outdoor space.

    Weight restrictions

Make sure you know what you plan on having on the deck. For instance, you don’t want to build a deck and then buy a 5 man hot tub that could weigh over 6,000 pounds filled with water, without knowing how much weight your deck will hold. When you have a party, you want to know how many people it will hold with no problem.

    Research your lumber

Know what kind of look you want your deck to have. Do you want a dark redwood deck, or a pale wood color like cedar wood? Redwood and cedar are both rot and insect resistant, perfect for maintaining a long lasting deck.

    Composite decking

If you’re wanting a different look to your deck consider composite decking, which has really taken off over the last several years. This type of material is made of recycled plastic and wood flour, made to look like wood, and has a lot of great sustainability benefits.

The new Multi-Width Decking at TimberTech comes in multi-colors and multi-widths which allows different design possibilities. Alternate colors and random boards can add a touch of the unexpected. And the best part is that you can order up to 4 free samples to get a feel of the product and choose the right one for your deck.

TimberTech offers composite decking that is an entire system designed to work together seamlessly.

    Deck pergola

Are you considering a bit of shade, that adds more character to your deck? A pergola can be used for lighting, attaching speakers, and adding leafy vines for more character.

    Put on a nice finish

Make sure that when the project is wrapping up, you put a nice finish on your deck to protect it from the weather and elements. You want this expensive project to last a long time, and give it a nice sharp look to it. They can stand up to weather and are known to be 40% better slip resistance and are held for superior mold resistant.

If you’ve built a deck already, what other advice would you give to someone thinking about building one?
