Why You’ll Love This Dirt Cake Recipe
- Easy to make using simple ingredients and no baking required.
- Delicious flavor thanks to the combination of Oreo cookies and creamy chocolate pudding.
- Fun presentation for an Easter celebration with layers of “dirt” made from crushed Oreos and marshmallow bunnies.
- Customizable recipe that can be modified by adding in your favorite toppings such as colorful sprinkles to make it even more festive or switching up pudding flavors.
Easter Dirt Cake Ingredients
- Cookies: I used regular Oreos, but you can use any flavor you prefer, such as Golden Oreos or other flavors of Oreos. I don’t recommend the Double Stuff Oreos.
- Cream cheese: This adds creaminess and tanginess to the pudding layer. You can use a dairy-free cream cheese alternative if needed.
- Butter: softened and unsalted.
- Cool Whip: Used to fold into the pudding layer to make it light and airy. You can use homemade whipped cream as a substitute.
- Powdered sugar: This is used to sweeten the cream cheese layer.
- Peeps: These colorful marshmallow candies add a festive touch to the top of the cake. You can use any Easter candy or sprinkles to decorate.
- Pudding: I used instant chocolate pudding, but you can use any flavor you prefer. Vanilla or white chocolate would also work well.
How to Make Easter Dirt Cake
Crush the Oreos into fine crumbs using a food processor or a zip-top bag and a rolling pin. Spread evenly into the bottom of a 9X13 baking dish. Set aside some for the topping.
Beat together cream cheese, butter and powdered sugar in a bowl until smooth. Fold in Cool Whip and set aside.
In a separate bowl, whisk together chocolate pudding mix and milk until thickened. Fold in cream cheese mixture.
Layer the cream cheese mixture over the Oreo crust in your dish. Then top it off with the remaining crushed Oreo cookies.
Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight. When ready to serve, garnish with Peeps bunnies, edible Easter grass and Easter peanut M&M’s.
Variations
- Instead of using Oreo cookies as the base, try other types of cookies like graham crackers or gingersnaps.
- If you don’t have edible grass, make your own with coconut flakes and green food coloring or use green jimmies.
- Use different flavors of pudding or mix it up with one layer of vanilla and another layer of chocolate.
- Make individual servings by layering into cups.
Tips for the Perfect Easter Dirt Cake
- You can crush the Oreo cookies finely with a food processor or leave them chunky by placing them in a bag and crush with a rolling pin.
- Get creative with toppings using your favorite Easter candies or to fit the theme of any occasion.
- Chill your Easter Dirt Cake in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving to allow all the flavors to meld together and pudding to set.
How to Store
- Refrigerator: To store your Easter Dirt Cake, cover it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil before placing it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also cut the cake into individual servings and store in the fridge in airtight containers for a quick treat whenever a craving strikes.
- Freezer: Freezing is not recommended as it does not thaw out to its original state of making.
