Put-in-Bay is a small island located on South Bass Island in Ohio. Even though it’s a small there are plenty to do. Last time we visited we took our kids and they had a blast exploring the island and riding around in the golf cart. This time my husband I went by ourselves for a little romantic getaway for the day. I created a list of romantic things you can do as couple in a day at Put-in-Bay.
Romantic Things for Couples to Do in Put-in-Bay
Take the Miller Ferry Over
Enjoy the views of the water and the boats go by as you take the Miller Ferry over to Put-in-Bay. It’s a 20 minute ride and run every 30 minutes. If you need to take your vehicle or motorcycle the Miller Ferry can transport it back and forth for you. When you are ready to leave the island take the Miller Ferry back during sunset. It’s so pretty to watch as you glide across the water.
Walk a Preserve Park
There are several different preserve parks to walk the trails for a beautiful view overlooking the water. We hiked through the Massie Cliffside Preserve that ended in a beautiful view of Lake Erie where you could sit on the benches and watch the water or walk down to the water. If you get a chance to visit some of the other ones, I heard they have fantastic views as well and each are different.
Watch Butterflies
The Butterfly House is located at Perry’s Cave and filled with thousands of butterflies from all over the world. You can walk through it watching the butterflies flap their wings all around you. While you are not allowed to touch them but they may land on you and that is okay. They even have a butterfly chair you can sit in and watch them fly around the room. It is a fun experience, soothing and relaxing.
Walk the Beach
Put-in-Bay has a beautiful state park where you can walk the beach, watch the waves splash on shore or even take a swim in. There are 2 places on the island that are opened to the public to swim or walk on the beach located at South Bass Island State Park and a small secluded beach located at the end of Delaware Ave past Perry’s Monument. The beaches don’t have a sandy shoreline so make sure you wear water shoes or flip flops to walk along the rocks.
Visit a Winery
Sit back, relax and watch the boats come in and out. The Put-in-Bay Winery has the best view where you can sit outside, drink wine, listen to music and eat some cheese and crackers. I suggest getting a wine flight or two so you can try the different wines and then choose what you like to drink from that. Some wineries also offer a tour of the winery that you can take and drink while on the tour.
Stroll the Island on a Golf Cart
Golf carts are allowed on the island as they are considered licensed motor vehicles so you can drive them on the rode. The best place to get a golf cart is at E’s Carts. As soon as you get off the Miller Ferry, go up the hill and turn right to find E’s Carts. They are super affordable and you can choose up to an 8 passenger cart. It’s fun to stroll the island looking at the different cottages, watching the water and visit the different places on the island.
Eat at The Boardwalk
The Boardwalk at Put-in-Bay is know for their lobster bisque and let me tell you, it’s seriously so dang good. They also have really good perch, walleye, seafood and the best views of the water and boats coming in and out.
While they have 4 different locations for you to eat at, I suggest the Upper Deck. It has a great view the harbor, tableside service and great food. I of course had to get the lobster bisque along with a salad and my husband got the fried perch and walleye with key lime pie for dessert.
We ended the night by taking the Miller Ferry back to Catawba Island as the sun began to set. It was definitely a great time to spend together as a couple and get away for the day. Thank you Put-in-Bay for inviting and accommodating us on the island with tickets and a gift card to The Boardwalk.
