A simple crock pot method for serving hot dogs to a crowd with almost no effort.

hot dogs in a crock pot and a hot dog in a basket with toppings on it

Cooking hot dogs in a crock pot is one of the best party hacks there is. It’s an easy hands-off way to let the slow cooker do all the work while you finish prepping and getting ready for guests to arrive.

This cooking method works so well because you can cook a large batch all at once, and guests can easily grab a hot dog and customize it with their favorite toppings. We love turning this into a full hot dog bar and it’s always a hit at parties, game days and gatherings.

To make this work best, I recommend using a tall crock pot that’s at least 6 quarts so the full length of the hot dogs can stand upright and cook evenly, especially if you are using bun-length hot dogs. If you’re using traditional size hot dogs, an oval crock pot works too as long as you fill it enough so the hot dogs can stand up. If needed, you can also lay them down lengthwise.

The number of hot dogs you can make depends on the size of your crock pot. A 6 quart crock pot can hold about 50-60 hot dogs, while a 10 quart crock pot can hold up to 100. Smaller crock pots work perfectly if you’re serving fewer people.

    Helpful Tips

    • No need to add water to slow cooker as the hot dogs have plenty of moisture.

    • Plan for 1-2 hot dogs per person.
    • Cover when not serving to keep them warm.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long can hot dogs stay in crock pot on warm?

They can stay on the warm setting for a few hours and then will need to be stored in an airtight container in the fridge.

Can I use this method for brats?

Yes, you can but you need to sear them first on both sides in a skillet or grill. Then cook in crock pot on low for 4 hours or high for 2 hours or until cooked through.
