Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken

Ingredients

  • 3-4 boneless chicken breasts
  • 1 package dry onion soup mix
  • 3 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 large onions sliced into rings
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup beef broth

Instructions

  • Prepare your slow cooker by spraying it with cooking spray on the bottom and along the sides.
  • Add butter to the bottom of the slow cooker.
  • Add the sliced onions to the bottom of the slow cooker. Sprinkle dried onion soup mix over top. Pour in beef broth. Add minced garlic on top.
  • Place the chicken breasts on top of the sliced onions. Season chicken with salt, pepper and thyme.
  • Cook on high 4-6 hours or low 6-8 hours making sure to flip the chicken halfway and until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 F degrees.
  • Add Swiss cheese slices on top of chicken for the last 30 minutes or until cheese is melted.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

Recipe Tips & Variations

  • Can add breadcrumbs to chicken for more crunch.
  • If you don't have swiss cheese or don't like it you can replace it with Gruyere cheese.
  • Vidalia onions work great in this recipe but can also use sweet onions instead.
  • Serve with potatoes, rice, egg noodles and/or cooked vegetables for a complete meal.
