Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 lb. margarine at room temperature
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • Extra flour for rolling out dough

Instructions

  • To make old fashioned rolled sugar cookies, start by creaming together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add ingredients in this order; Beat in the eggs, baking soda, baking powder, salt and vanilla extract until well combined.
  • Then slowly add in the flour while mixing until a smooth dough forms. Cover and chill in fridge for 30 minutes.
  • Once the dough is ready, roll it out on a lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out your cookies with a cookie cutter or a knife, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake the cookies at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes, or until they're lightly golden around the edges.
  • When the cookies are done, let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Decorate the cookies with icing or sprinkles.
  • Allow frosting to harden for 2-4 hours before placing it in containers.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 weeks.

Notes

Recipe Tips

  • Dough is supposed to be soft. If the dough is too sticky to work with, you can add a little extra flour.
  • Let your cookies cool completely before adding frosting or decorations - this will help them hold their shape.
  • Room temperature butter is key for getting the right consistency, so be sure to set your butter out ahead of time.
  • Don't over-bake your cookies - they should be just lightly golden around the edges.
  • When cutting out your cookies, be sure to flour your work surface and rolling pin well. This will prevent the dough from sticking and making a mess.
