Meet Bob Odenkirk (voice of “Winston Deavor”) & Catherine Keener (voice of “Evelyn Deavor”) who are the new corporate duo and siblings in Incredibles 2. They are new to the superhero world but fit right in just like they should. Or shouldn’t! You will have to be the judge of that when you see it. I had the chance to interview both of them while I was in LA for the Incredibles 2 event. We talked about working with Brad Bird, their new roles in the film and more.

Meet Incredibles 2 Corporate Duo Bob Odenkirk & Catherine Keener

Working with Brad Bird

The privilege to work with Brad Bird is a great one. Not only is he a talented filmmaker but also knows how to tell a story. And did I mention he also does great impressions of all the characters? Yes, that’s true! We asked them what it like to work with Brad Bird and this is what they had to say.

Catherine Keener: “I had no idea about anything but heard that he wanted me for this part. So, when Brad called he told me that I’m doing this movie. I started pouring praise on it. I told home I’m really busy, ’cause of this and that and I said, oh, well, I’m in. And he goes, okay, great.”

Bob Odenkirk: “Yeah, all we did was praise Brad, because that’s the reason. Everyone’s like oh you’re in a Pixar movie. Can you believe it? No, but I’m in a Brad Bird movie. That’s what’s blowing my mind. And you feel like you’re in really good hands and one who doesn’t steal your own inspiration and creative input.”

Similarities to Characters

We asked both of them what they thought of their animated self on the big screen and if they thought they had any similarities with characters.

Bob Odenkirk: “I don’t know. People have said my character looks a lot like me, and there’re ways I think, yeah, that it is. And then there are ways I’m like, wow, I’m not remotely like that. Obviously I don’t dress as well as the character. That’s for sure.”

Bob also talks about Catherine’s character and said that she is alluring and talks about how she draws you in. Catherine just laughs and agrees that her character is great.

Real Life Superhero Power

Of course we had to ask if they could chose a real life superhero power what would it be. Bob mentions that Catherine has a really good one and I have to agree with him as I liked her answer. But Bob also had a good one too.

Bob Odenkirk: “I would like to be able to eat whatever I want and not gain weight.”

Catherine Keener: “I would just like to be able to go home at any time, that’s all I wanna do. Just clap my hands and And I’m home. I’m in my pajamas. My bed’s made. Clothes are off the floor. And I’m ready to go to bed, you know.”

Character Challenges

In everything we do there is a possibility of challenges that come with work. We asked them both if there were any challenges with their characters or scenes they felt like they had to try again.

Catherine Keener: “It was like one run on tape for hours. I mean there were times where I would start and I’d be, oh, wait, wait, and Brad was like like “that was good”.”

“You have to trust Brad, because he’s putting the movie together, And he knows the tone of it all and the other characters, and it’s changing over time. So, you could feel it changing in the script, the tone, a little bit, but you don’t know really know where or how. And you never have the whole script. But you really just guessing at what might work. So, you give him what he wants, get that first and then maybe say what if I tried this and that.”

Bob Odenkirk: “Brad ended up telling me that he used a lot of my stuff. I think he was saying that a fair amount of the things that I tried or offered up, he said he used.”

Two women characters, fully intelligent and super strong. – Bob Odenkirk

Touching Notes from Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener

The interview ended with some touching notes that they both shared about the movie that made an impact on them.

Bob Odenkirk talks about how he was happy that his daughter was there to see the movie and see a female superhero along with seeing the scene where Mr. Incredible is knocking on Violet’s bedroom door and she tells him to leave her alone. Bob Odenkirk really liked that his daughter got to experience what it’s like on the other side of her door because he wants her to see that in real life he’s there to help her but he can’t.

Bob Odenkirk: “There’s a scene where you see Evelyn and Elastigirl facing off. That to me is a scene that you don’t see. Two women characters, fully intelligent and super strong. They are not rushing past it, taking the time, picking each other apart, picking apart the themes of the movie for an extended moment. And the fact that that is two women.”

Bob Odenkirk: “If that was a guy and Elastigirl, fundamentally not the same message to the audience subconsciously of female characters can be well-rounded. And they can be evil and good and both at the same time and take part of the story on the level those two characters in that moment. It would not be the same to just have Elastigirl be the superhero. That’s great. But that scene is what separates it from the thing.”

Catherine Keener: “I totally agree with you and appreciate that Brad never made an issue out of that. It’s like he never said, oh, this is, even though, like you said, subconsciously. It is unusual, but he just presented it as reality. And in our experience, it is so reality.”

ABOUT THE MOVIE

Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in “Incredibles 2” – but this time Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell) and Dash (voice of Huck Milner) to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. It’s a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack’s emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) must find a way to work together again—which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible.
