Have you been following “The Family” Sunday nights 9/8c on ABC? It’s so good! I mean unbelievably good leaving you with tons of questions in the end. One minute you think you have it all figured out and then a twist in the story appears literally keeping you on the edge of your seat.

I had the chance to sit down with Zach Gilford (“Danny”), Alison Pill (“Willa”), Floriana Lima (“Bridey”), Creator & Executive Producer, Jenna Bans and Executive Producer, Laurie Zaks for last Sunday’s episode while having a family dinner. During the episode you could hear a pin drop as it was so quiet and everyone’s eyes were glued to the TV. If you missed last week’s episode be sure to watch it on

We also watched the following week’s Episode 108 “Sweet Jane” which will air tonight on ABC at 9/8c. All I can say is that this is one episode you do not want to miss. There is one part you will gasp at. That is all I can say without spoiling it for you. I will be tuning in also to watch it again!

How the Show was Created

Jenna Bans the creator of the show got the idea based off of how she lived in a house where a sex offender lived across the street from her and she would get freaked out and really scared. And also ABC wanted to do a mystery thriller so she married the two ideas together and that is where the show “The Family” was created.

Alison Pill as Willa

While Alison is a funny and sweet person in normal life she plays a not so nice person on TV.  When we asked her how she gets into character she mentions that they have really good writers for the show and it makes sense to her. She thinks back to that moment Madeline Arthur (young Willa) and I switch places on the bed in the motel. And she’s fully frozen at thirteen. She is somebody who will do anything to keep her family together. And everything else that is built up- all of this armor is only to get to her ultimate goal, which is having her entire family under one roof again. That’s it. And literally, everything else is driven by that.

Zach Gilford as Danny

As soon as Zach entered the room he was hysterical. He plays Danny the older brother who likes to have fun and doesn’t take life too seriously. An interesting fact we learned is that Zach never exchanges a dialogue with Rupert Graves as John (Dad). You may noticed that they never had any lines or scenes together in the show at all. Zach also mentioned that if they did they would probably just crack up at each other. You may also remember Zach from the show Friday Night Lights who played the quarterback.

Floriana Lima as Bridey

First of all, I just love her name as it is as beautiful as she is. She is so sweet in real life but plays a rather twisting role as connects herself to the brother & sister in one way or another. Floriana had nothing but nice things to say about each actor on the show.

Fun Facts I Learned about The Family

  • I have had loved Andrew McCarthy since the movie Mannequin. I remember him playing all of these sweet and innocent roles and now playing Hank as this deep dark character is like Whoa. It is definitely a different role for him and he plays it so well. I have learned that not only does he play Hank on The Family but also is a director for part of the scenes of the show.
  • The cast members really get along with each other on and off set.
  • Not only is Joan Allen a good actor but she can bake too. She made 150 cookies from her grandmother’s recipe on her day off and brought them in before holiday break plus, she made a baked potato bar for the whole cast.

Curious how they shoot the scenes from ten years ago to the present day? Well it turns out that they figure out the present stories to tell and then look at what flashbacks could possibly inform those stories because ideally, they’re always connected together thematically sort of tied together, where the past story is directly telling you something about the present story. We try not to be tied to “we must have six flashbacks an episode” and only use what we need to use because we didn’t want it to feel tired and wanted it to feel important when you were watching the past. There’s a reason we’re telling you the story.”
