Disclosure: Disney is providing me with an all expense paid trip to LA to the #IntoTheWoodsEvent and #ABCFamilyEvent featured in this post to facilitate my review. All opinions are 100% mine and not influenced in any way.
I remember watching Melissa Joan Hart as a kid in High School on Clarissa Explains It All, then Sabrina the Teenage Witch and now Melissa and Joey. Who knew that I would actually be talking to her in person about motherhood 24 years later. In case you didn’t know, Melissa plays Mel on Melissa and Joey. In real life she has been married to musician Mark Wilkerson since July 19, 2003 and they have three children together.
She talks about how the show is about what really happens when people get married. She says it is similar to what her and her husband have and how their relationship thrives on bickering to where it’s like a flirting. “I have so many people in my life that look at me and my husband and go, I don’t get your marriage. You don’t have to. 12 years later, I think it’s OK.”, says, Melissa.
Q:Is it important for you to bring the same aspects of family life to make it like a real marriage and not like a typical TV marriage?
Melissa Joan Hart: Usually in comedies the wife is the one that’s keeping the family together and the husband gets to be total fruitcake. In this one, I get to be the fruitcake, so I love that. That’s what I wanted. On this show, I get to be a complete lush, you know, completely self-centered. Even though the show has changed 3 times now, I still get to play that character that I wanted to be.
She recently did 5 Walmart commercials with her family during Peter Pan Live!. Did you see them? She says this was just a special opportunity that she couldn’t say no to. She wanted to have forever footage for her family so that is why she choose to do the commercials.
Melissa also talks about how this is the best job ever with a great schedule for moms. Since they shoot the show over 3 days, rehearse for 2 days and one live show she has the weekends free with her family. The only problem is that her family lives on the East Coast. Her husband and kids try to spend as much time with her as they can so half of the year her family is in LA and the other half they are in Connecticut.
Q: What experience from being a Mom have you brought to your role on this show?
Melissa Joan Hart: The exact opposite. Everything that I know about being a Mom, I try to do the exact opposite of my instincts for Mel cause she doesn’t know about motherhood. You know, she didn’t have a baby. It’s so different when you have and raise a baby, they become these little people, and you know their personalities throughout. Then all of a sudden, you’re given Teenagers. I think you’ve known them and you’ve spoiled them, being your Niece and Nephews. I try to bring that to Mel, you know, just inappropriate things. Like telling too many stories about Sex and Alcohol and then realizing Oh, I’m not supposed to be saying that to you.
At the end of the interview she mentions that her clothing line, King of Hearts for Little Boys Spring/Summer line will be available in specialty stores March 2015 and the Winter 2014 line is currently available for pre-order online at Kingofharts.com. She was super excited to talk about her clothing line as she mentions that boys clothes need to be fun too. She says that there will be lots of cute graphic tees and other pieces to complete the outfit such as military inspired outerwear.
