I’m so excited for the new TV series Splitting Up Together airing tonight at 9:30|8:30c on ABC. I got a chance to see a few episodes when I was in LA last month. I immediately fell in love with the story and cast after watching it. While we were there we had a chance to interview Oliver Hudson (“Martin”), Lindsay Price (“Camille”), Executive Producer/Showrunner Emily Kapnek and Executive Producer Dean Holland.

During the interview, we talked about how the show portrayed divorce in real life, what made them want to be apart of the show and a possible chance of Oliver Hudson being on the show Dancing with the Stars.

Q: How do you think this show will portray divorce in real life?

Emily: “I think we felt like a lot of people seem to identify with the world and the characters whether they were going through a divorce or not. I think the main goal is just to tell a story about divorce that isn’t toxic and negative that has a little bit of hope and a little bit of optimism. I know a lot of couples that have good relationships, even if they didn’t reconcile, just good relationships with their exes and they’re co-parenting happily, and I just don’t think you see a lot of that represented.”

Oliver: “You don’t have to be divorced to relate to this because it’s about co-parenting. As individuals coming from different backgrounds and families, we have different ideas on how we wanna raise our kids.”

Dean: “Historically it’s always been kind of negative that divorce is such a bad thing. And while we were shooting it, numerous people came up to us and told us we’re doing this. My friends are doing this. So many people [are divorced] and both still raise kids together and somehow manage to make it work.”

Q: What about the show made you want to be apart of it?

Oliver: “This for me is the most connected that I’ve been to a project just because I live this life. And when I read for Emily she was sitting way back and I was like I want this job so bad.”

Lindsey: “This script in and of itself captivated me, and I loved the characters because they’re real people. But I do think it’s interesting she (Camille) probably immediately seemed selfish that she doesn’t want them to get divorced.”

There are some dancing scenes in the first few episodes were he had to learn the moves with a dance instructor. Being the case that ABC owns Dancing with the Stars we asked if he was getting ready to be on the show. He laughed and didn’t give us a definite yes or no but said maybe. So we shall see if we will see him on the next season.

Lena and Martin were once madly in love. But, like many marriages, time and circumstance eventually took their toll, and they decide that everyone’s lives would be better if they got a divorce. Facing a daunting real estate market, the couple decide not to sell their house and to “Bird Nest” instead. The ‘on-duty’ parent will live in the house while the ‘off-duty’ parent will live in the detached garage. As Lena begins to dip her toes into the dating waters, Martin begins to see his own culpability in his marriage falling apart.
