Of course there has to be a bad guy in every Star Wars film and Ben Mendelsohn plays it so naturally as the role of Orson Krennic. The brief amount of film I saw of Rogue One made me love to hate him even more in the film. In real life he is actually a funny and friendly guy. I got to sit down and interview him a few weeks ago and turned out to be a hilarious interview.

About His Character Orson Krennic
He is the director of military intelligence and operations. And for the purposes of the film it means he’s the dude that built the Death Star and is bringing it to its final brilliance.

Evil VS Good
When asked if he prefer evil vs good roles, this is what he said.
Ben: “Well, I do think there’s a certain if you like palette of emotions that you get to work with more if you’re playing you know the bad guys like the angry, resentful, enraged sort of stuff. I think, look I consider it a real honor to be playing you know bad guys in certainly in this film and there’ll be one or two more. I’ve had a long and varied career so I don’t associate myself with my characters you know but it’s fine that everyone else does.”

How He Got the Role
He met the director Gareth Edwards on a rooftop in LA to discuss the part. He mentioned that the conversation got a little foggy because he was so overwhelmed with excitement over it and was pretty sure by the end of the conversation he was offered the part.

On Becoming the Villain
To get in that mind frame to become a Villain he separates life from work. He says it’s sort of like play time where one minute you are playing cobs and robbers and then next is life. He thinks the hardest thing is how do you take on these things knowing that people are going to look at you and go, I hate that guy? But since he has been acting for a little while he hopes that people feel him in whatever way that is.

While he did not give us the full details he did mention that there is an amazing scene with him and Darth Vader and then another different scene with Imperial Territories that is amazing as well. I can’t wait to see the movie on December 16th to find out what he is talking about.
Be sure to take the entire family to see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in theaters on December 16!
