“It’s a point of pride wearing the suit.” – Chris Evans

Chris Evans is my hero and you may know him as Captain America. He’s a genuine, nice, funny,  down-to-earth, well-liked kind of guy. I had a chance to chat with him last week while I was in LA for the Captain America Event. During the interview we talked about family, friendship, Captain America, and My Little Pony.

The Captain America Uniform

This is actually the 6th time that Chris Evans has worn the Captain America suit. For the first time he wore the suit he was a little terrified and wondered if things would go wrong. Now feels humbled and honored to be wearing the suit and having a connection to it. Captain America will live on, there will be other Captain Americas, there will. It will live on, a lot longer than I will. So it’s just nice to kind of have a little place in its lineage, says Chris.

The Transition into a Darker Role

Captain America Civil War is a little darker than the other movies have been and we asked Chris what it was like to transition into a darker role. He tells us that Cap is selfless guy, he’s not one of these brooding characters where you can kind of as an audience member connect to his conflict and struggle. His goal is doing what other people need but this movie is doing what he wants and that is a little departure for him. Bucky is the only the only remaining chapter of Cap’s life before and it’s the first time he’s really kind of said  “I’m choosing me over you”.  And it’s tough for him but I like that.

You can see a great friendship Captain America has with Bucky in the movie and we wondered if his friendship with Falcon will be changing. He says that has been one of the big questions wondering if he is team Bucky or team Falcon. He mentions that it is tricky because in the comic books one of these guys gets the shield. He doesn’t know what Marvel is going to do. As he laughs he says that is a strange thing because he doesn’t want to give the shield away but he has to. So whatever happens, happens.

Helicopter Scene

Let’s talk about the helicopter scene where we can see him flex his muscles. And yes those are his muscles. Whoa! He mentions that his arm to this day is not the same. Because it’s a fake helicopter they did the first couple of scenes to where he is just holding on. The helicopter, is on a rig, so you can actually move it, he says. But then they did move it and it actually required to actually have to hold on and when you’re holding, it stretches. Laughing he says, “It’s not like I’d get any sympathy out of you anyway, obviously, I didn’t.” But I really did bang something up.

My Little Pony and Care Bears

Growing up he didn’t have a favorite superhero as he had an older sister. Whatever Carly wanted to do, we did. So we played My Little Pony and Care Bears. That was it. Just being in Carly’s room was a big deal. You’re like, don’t mess it up, just sit here whatever she gives us to play with, that’s what we’re playing with. She’d give us the fuzzy My Little Ponies not the plastic ones that were nice… no, she’d give us the fuzzy ones that gave me willies, you know what I mean. It was My Little Ponies, Cabbage Patch, Care Bears. I wasn’t cool enough. I didn’t have a brother being like, play with GI Joe, I was a lot softer than that.

The last question we asked Chris was an important one and I loved his answer.

What were your thoughts when Marvel threatened to boycott Georgia if they passed the Anti-Gay bill?

I really thought it was great. My younger brother is gay and he was the one sending me these text messages before I knew about it.  He was like good for Disney and it was just a nice thing to read about. I mean Disney spends huge money in Georgia and I was so proud of Disney for standing up to that and making a statement saying listen, this is what we feel and this is what we believe in. Look, it’s a hate bill that they were trying to pass, it’s one of those gray areas where you talk to these people, and they’re like well we’re allowed to think what we want. Look, it’s one of those really tricky things where you need to be able to be an intelligent speaker. You need to be able to somehow articulate. Listen, I understand what you’re saying but, I was proud of Disney, I really was, and I was glad it happened. I was glad it worked out. And there are still some states that are messing up. I was proud to be a part of the Disney family during that.

Captain America will be in theaters on 5/6/16 so be sure to mark your calendars and take the whole family to see it.
