Gareth Edwards is the man making history all over the world as the director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that is now playing in theaters everywhere. The British film director is known for directing the 2014 reboot of Godzilla but will soon be known even more for Rogue One. He has always been fascinated by Star Wars films and that is the main reason he wanted to start directing. I got the chance to interview him while I was in San Francisco a few weeks ago. He is quite funny and charming.

If He Knew 30 Years Ago

He first mentions that if he would have known most of his life that we would today be in fact directing a Star Wars film that he would have been a nervous wreck, never would have done schoolwork, and probably would have never had a job so he could prepare for it for the next 30 years. He is actually glad he didn’t know ahead of time because that is the organic part of filming is not knowing and not having a plan. Like for example one day he was filming and turned the camera to the left and got a glimpse of the camera crew in the shot and they all ran because they were in the shot but Gareth was okay with that. Once it sunk in that he was okay with it the crew started to dress up in Star Wars costumes just in case they did get in the shot again.

Choosing the Cast

To choose the cast it was not about over thinking. He had to imagine the characters first and when they would start discussing the characters someone would mention they were like a character from another film or from a certain movie. That got the wheels turning to find out who would be best for each part. Thankfully the cast were all Star Wars fans to begin with so accepting the parts were a no-brainer.

How He Got His Foot in the Door

He first went to film school but never got that call from Hollywood as he jokingly says that he thinks they lost his number. So he started to work at a supermarket to make enough money to buy a computer and learn digital technology since that was the new thing for filming. He thought the whole learning process would take about 6 months when it actually took him 10 years to learn it. Then, one day he had enough and said that he could not be an old man without ever really trying what he wanted to do and that was directing.

So he quit his job and filmed for a company about 5 people traveling around Central America. When he finally got it finished he went to show it to the company and the projection broke down. After the projection broke down a man hands him a business card which he found out he agents Quinton Tarantino and Tim Burton. That is where his big break came in and made Godzilla. And now the rest is history after that. Talk about being at the right place at the right time!

Blue Milk Confession

So during the interview Gareth gives us a confession of his. He woke up on his 30th birthday at Luke Skywalker’s house not by accident because of a crazy night but on purpose. He took some blue dye with him because he wanted to drink blue milk at the very same table where he does with Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen. But the problem was that when he went to drink it the milk spilled all over the floor leaving a big blue permanent stain. He felt really bad that he left a mark on cinema history but he kind of left his mark if you know what I mean.

During the interview you could tell he was really proud of his work and what he has accomplished. He actually mentioned that he has a cameo in the movie but could not tell us what is was since it was a spoiler so you will have to go see the movie to find out what it is.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now playing in theaters everywhere so be sure to go and see it!

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.
