Aladdin Movie Review

Aladdin Movie ReviewA whole new world is coming to theaters on May 24th with the live action Aladdin movie. I was able to screen it early and thought it was good but not great. There were several things that stood out to me and several that did not agree with me. Here are my thoughts on the film.

Aladdin Movie Review

It’s a live action film and not a remake so they definitely stayed true to the story. The visuals in the film came to life as it was filled with color, beautiful scenery, and exquisite costumes. If you’re going to see the film, I highly suggest seeing it in an IMAX theater. The sound and details are so much better than seeing it in a regular theater.

The soundtrack is the same as the original animated film except there is a new song called “Speechless” sang by Naomi Scott who plays Jasmine. Aladdin (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is now available for purchase so you can listen to it again and again.

I feel that Jasmine stole the show with her strength and courage on being a fearless leader. Her inner voice was so powerful in the film and she was strikingly beautiful.

Will Smith played Genie in the movie and definitely brought his own uniqueness to the character. I was disappointed that he did not add more humor to the character with a little bit of a Fresh Prince twist to it. Instead he played it safe and made the character his own. It’s hard to fill Robin Williams shoes and I feel that the choice to play the Genie was not the wisest one. I think that a different actor would of been better such as someone like Jim Carey with that funny personality.

Mena Massoud as Aladdin will reel you in with his smile and charming personality. I felt like he nailed the Aladdin character and had some great stunts going through the streets of Agrabah. My favorite part is when Jasmine and Aladdin sing “A Whole New World” soaring through the sky on the magic carpet.

Marwan Kenzari as Jafar was not my favorite at all. I don’t think he did the character any justice. His voice in the film was too high pitched and didn’t seem much of a bad guy. And Iago had too deep of a voice for a parrot and did not seem fitting. They should of switched the voices of the characters to make it more fitting.

If you like live action films and/or your kids have not seen Aladdin yet, then you may like this movie. It is now playing in theaters everywhere for you to take your family to see.

ALADDIN is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, the film is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s ALADDIN.
