7 tips to plan a family road trip

A family road trip sounds simple if you plan ahead of time.  I love family road trips because you can go at your own pace, don’t have to worry about over packing, and the travel costs are cheaper. Here are some tips to Plan a Family Road Trip and make it go smoother. Plus, be sure to enter for a chance to win a $25 Sunoco Gas Gift Card at the bottom of the post.

1. Make sure the car is ready.
Get an oil change, fill up the gas tank, rotate tires, or any other service you think you vehicle may need before you get on the road. This will help make your car safer during your trip.

2. Clean out the car.
Having a clean car may not last long while you travel but it’s nice to get everything out of it you don’t need and clean it out. This may give you some more room for that extra pair of shoes. 😉

3. Prepare a goodie bag for kids.
Gather some new items for the kids to do while traveling in the car to keep them busy. I stop by my local Dollar Store and pick up some activities. I also try to get a few new movies that haven’t seen to watch along the way.

4. Have an emergency car kit.
Prepare an emergency car kit such as band-aid’s, neosporin, ointment, etc. and put it in a small tote for emergencies. I usually stick it under a seat that someone can get to if needed.

5. On-the-Go Snacks.
Purchase a variety of snacks that are perfect for on-the-go snacking and leave little to no mess.

6. Pack up the car the day before.
Making sure the car is loaded the night before will help relieve some stress when it is time to go. I make sure that all suitcases, activities, and other non-valuable items are loaded in the car the day before. Whatever is left I have sitting by the front door to get loaded the day of the trip.

7. Don’t always have a plan.
Sometimes the best trips don’t always have a plan. Take your time to get to your destination by stopping at some fun/historical stops along the way.

While taking your next road trip, consider picking up and using a Sunoco Gas Gift Card. The gas gift card can be used at all Sunoco locations. And they are not just for gas, you can use them for car repairs at Sunoco stations with a garage, snacks, or coffee while on your road trip.

Save money with a Sunoco Gas Credit Card and get $.05 off per gallon at over 4,000 Sunoco locations. Plus, you can get ATM access nationwide for all of those unexpected purchases at the souvenir shops.

Find a Sunoco near you by using the gas station locator. This will help you find Sunoco locations along your travel route.

I like to bring a cooler with lemonade, iced tea, soda, and or fruit juice and snacks – fruit, crackers, to nibble on along the way.

My tip is to make sure you have a first aid kit in the car at all times and make sure to pack drinks and snacks for the trip.

I’d suggest planning for all different types of weather like rain, heat and cold and bring extra clothing and items for that.
