can you survive on a capsule wardrobe

Do you think you can survive on just 37 items in your closet? That is what we call a capsule wardrobe and consists of basic items you can mix and match to create several outfits without the clutter in your closet.

The thought of just 37 items in my closet sounds amazing and may stop me from saying “I don’t have anything to wear”. Yes, I will have more room, an organized closet, and less laundry but I am wondering if I can actually survive on just 37 pieces in my closet. I am working on being more of a minimalist and think this would be a good one to try out as a weekend project. What do you think?

How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe

First things first is that you must choose 37 items in your wardrobe and that includes tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and shoes for each season. There is no shopping allowed as you must mix and match the 37 pieces for a full season. For the other 3 seasons you create a capsule for can be stored away until it the next season. Some items may be rolled from capsule to capsule but make sure there are just 37 pieces in each one.

Step 1: Start by emptying your closet and make two piles of items you wear often and items you don’t wear often.

Step 2: Sort through the items you wear often and narrow it down.

Step 3: Next sort through the items you don’t wear often and narrow that pile down.

Step 4: From the items you don’t want make two piles of what you would like to sell and the other to donate. If you don’t want to sell anything bag up the items you don’t want to donate.

Step 5: Sort through the two piles you narrowed down to find versatile pieces and narrow it down to just 37 pieces for each season.

Step 6: Keep the current season capsule wardrobe in your closet and store the others away. I use Rubbermaid Storage Totes and store them in my crawl space.
